This four-day workshop takes place in Easton, Connecticut at the Kinstler Studio. It’s for all levels and will focus on designing a studio painting from plein air studies and/or photos. We’ll begin in the studio for an introductory slide show and demo. Then we’ll head outdoors for a couple of days (weather permitting). Artists will learn to quickly gather the necessary visual information needed to complete a painting in the field. Learning how to simplify a landscape and interpret color relationships will be a primary focus of this workshop but other fundamental concepts will also be discussed including the importance of values, shapes and edges.
The second part of this workshop will be in the studio where the focus will be on designing a studio painting from plein air studies and photos taken from the scene. Artists will learn to analyze the information they gathered in the field interpreting color and value relationships in order to create depth in a landscape painting. Many outdoor painting principles will be discussed – including how to design a landscape, and the importance of values, shapes and edges – but with a greater focus on composing a finished piece.
